Beer style: Grape Stout
Grapes are the basis and namesake of a popular beverage: the plump red, blue or white fruits are traditionally used to make fine wine However, the beer industry has also become aware of the grape in the wake of the craft beer movement Thanks to its broad spectrum of aromas and elegant acidity, it is wonderfully suited to giving beers a special touch Traditionally, the finished brew is stored on the fruit to flavor it with the taste, but the grape can also be brewed directly into it
The brewers at Flügge opted for the former method For their latest creation, they chose Merlot grapes to mature their strong stout The beer, the color of freshly brewed coffee, was brewed with English malts, oatmeal and rock candy and then poured onto a bed of grapes The aging on the fruit not only deepened the beer's own aroma, but also gave it gentle hints of red wine and oak
The masterpiece is called Fiyo and is a symphony of dark roasted malt, heavy red wine, coffee, melt-in-the-mouth chocolate, purple grapes, licorice and a fiery 8.3% alcohol content The Grape Stout combines fruity acidity, earthy notes and a creamy sweetness to create a complex overall picture
