Tequila Sunrise

Imagine a radiant dawn over a picturesque beach, illuminating the sky in shades of orange, red and yellow. Now imagine you could capture this breathtaking scene in a glass. That's the Tequila Sunrise - a visually stunning cocktail that's as colorful as it is delicious.

The roots of the classic cocktail with tequila date back to the 1930s, but it gained international fame in the 1970s thanks to rock 'n' roll. It is said to have been perfected at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix by bartender Gene Sulit. Sulit wanted to create a cocktail that reflected the breathtaking Arizona sunsets.

The Rolling Stones - trailblazers for the Tequila Sunrise

However, the Tequila Sunrise only became really popular when the Rolling Stones tasted it extensively during their North American tour in 1972. They discovered it right at the start of their tour when they stopped off in a small town in California. The Trident, a well-located restaurant in Sausalito, California, was also a popular meeting place for Mexican drug smugglers at the time - which ensured that tequila sales were higher than in any other bar in the Bay Area.

So when the Rolling Stones invade Trident, the local bartenders have already experimented mightily with tequila cocktails. Instead of the margarita they ordered, bartender Bobby Lozoff served Mick Jagger his latest favorite drink - the Tequila Sunrise. The Stones' frontman was so impressed that he ordered a whole round for the band - and had the recipe handed to him as the band stumbled out of the Trident at dawn. The tour drink for 1972 had been found.

Tequila Sunrise Rezept

Which tequila is used for the Tequila Sunrise?

To prepare a Tequila Sunrise, you should choose a high-quality tequila. Blanco or reposado tequilas are well suited to this cocktail, as their different flavors complement the sweet and spicy notes of the cocktail. However, a good blanco is generally preferred. Don't skimp on the tequila - after all, it is one of the main ingredients. Only a high-quality tequila will make your Tequila Sunrise a really good drink.

Tequila Sunrise recipe

Ingredients (for 2 portions):

  • 9 cl Tequila Blanco
  • 18 cl freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 3 cl grenadine syrup
  • 2 orange slices
  • 2 cocktail cherries

Preparation:

  1. Fill two highball glasses or fancy glasses with ice cubes.
  2. Add the tequila and orange juice and stir.
  3. Slowly drizzle the grenadine down the side of the glass or over the back of a spoon so that it settles at the bottom.
  4. Garnish with a slice of orange and a cocktail cherry.

The Tequila Sunrise is a refreshing cocktail made with a mixture of tequila, orange juice, grenadine syrup and lemon juice and has a delicious fruity taste.
