Barrel portrait: Ex-Sauterne Cask

Sauternes wine comes from the Sauternes region of the same name, a sub-region of the Bordeaux wine-growing region. It is not known how Sauternes became a local specialty, but it gained international fame thanks to Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. He was heavily involved in the French wine business during his time as US ambassador to France.

There are only a few legal requirements for Sauternes wine. First of all, of course, it must come from the region in question. It must also have at least 13% vol. alcohol and a strong sweetness.

About the production process:

The whiskies are stored in a listed building in Schwäbisch Hall - a vaulted cellar over 400 years old - which provides ideal room conditions for continuous maturation. As regionality and quality play an important role for the founders, they have intensified their cooperation with a local distiller in the Hohenlohe district. He distils the distillate for the barrels according to their specifications.

Whisky-Werk is a young and innovative company, which Marco Hage founded together with Jörg Zahorodnyj, an established whisky trader, at the beginning of 2020. The idea to work together in the field of whisky came up spontaneously when both accidentally realized that together they can draw on more than 40 years of experience in the field of whisky & spirits. Reason enough to pour this knowledge and creation into a venture to follow the whisky passion. The storage of the whiskies takes place in a listed building in Schwäbisch Hall - a vaulted cellar over 400 years old - which provides ideal room conditions for constant maturation. Since regionality and quality play an important role, the cooperation with a local distiller in the Hohenlohe district was intensified, who distills the raw material of next generations of barrels according to strict specifications. All (pre-used) barrels as...
